Topic: Immigration

Perhaps the biggest issue facing the construction industry today is immigration. What ideas do you have to reform our current immigration system?

    Bill,

1.)   Are the increased documentation requirements for hiring immigrants posing a significant challenge to construction businesses?  How are they ensuring that they’re compliant?

2.)   Does he foresee increased importance of the role of PEO companies in hiring construction labor to try to mitigate/outsource the risk?

    Many thanks,

    Tony

    Hi Tony,

Sorry you missed the call.  We had some excellent discussion on your questions.  With regard to documentation, it sounds like the proposed "no match" legislation has been blocked by a Federal judge's order.  So for now, we still have the same verification requirements.  However, many on the call have found that their clients, major corporations, are now hiring 3rd party consultants who are verifying employee status independently.  There were some on the call that found they had illegal employees who had been with them for over 10 years.  There was frustration in that they had been paying social security for these employees for all of this time yet the government never caught it!  I've posted a summary of the call and feel free to "blog in" if you have other comments or questions as I am sure today's callers may have better recollection than me!
